Then why is it *so* urgent to get the patched module out there? Two weeks *is* somewhat short notice. I half expect that maintenance will fall to you anyway, but *just in case* the author still cares about his module, I’d rather err on the side of caution. CPAN authors are people too, you know. I for one would be terribly upset to find someone had appropriated code of mine before I got a chance to have a say in the matter, *even if* I would have been willing (possibly even glad) to pass the pumpkin on.
