I did a binary chop on all the old versions of Data::Dumper I could find. The latest version that builds cleanly on Perl 5.0.5 is 2.09. With that installed Module::Build still has a couple of test failures - but nothing likely to bite me, so I installed it.

Is MB intended to work on 5.0.5?
