What gives you that impression?
The only thing *I* would recommend over passthrough is none. The recent
CPANPLUS updates (thanks to David, Chris, and Jos) make it unnecessary
anyway.
We're not yet to the point where older clients with an incorrectly set
prefer_installer are going to be automatically fixed by updating. But,
I didn't see the benefit in Makefile.PL compatibility several years
ago, let alone now.
