SMPP is the name of the protocol (documented in www.smpp.org),
hence its logical name. Other SMS sending modules exist, but they
mainly concentrate on exploiting free SMS gateways on the 'net. This
module aims to be carrier grade implementation if the said protocol.
You need to supply your own gateway. Typical audience is in the
business of operating such gateways ;-)
