Astro::FITS::CFITSIO
rationale:
CIAO is the software package developed to support analysis and
reduction of astronomical data from the Chandra X-ray Satellite
(http://chandra.harvard.edu/ for background on the Chandra
telescope; http://cxc.harvard.edu/ciao/ for information on the CIAO
software package; and
http://chandra.harvard.edu/chronicle/0402/nobel/ for details of the
2002 Noble prize for physics partly awarded for X-ray astronomy ;)
There are a number of software libraries within CIAO of interest to
those Astronomers with a perly bent, hence the use of the
Astro::CIAO namespace.
The initial interface to be provided is to the I/O library used by
CIAO - the DataModel (DM) library. As the perl interface will
contain a number of objects with names like Astro::CIAO::DM::Block
and Astro::CIAO::DM::Dataset, then using Astro::CIAO::DM rather than
Astro::CIAO::DataModel is preferred.
The Astro::FITS::CFITSIO package also provides an interface to an
I/O library used by Astronomers. The two C libraries have rather
different philosophies and interfaces and do not provide exactly the
same functionality; therefore this module is not duplicating the
work of the CFITSIO module. Future modules in the Astro::CIAO
namespace will also rely on the Astro::CIAO::DM module.
