@ Jason Garber I can't believe I overlooked your post but it's very helpful. I think I might be going with Linode instead of rackspace, but did everything you post also apply with Linode servers? Like are the repos made for rackspace or are they also compatible with Linode servers?
Also, how is it possible to check the amount of requests per second a server can handle? I plan on testing my current host with my new host to see the amount of improvement. @ Graham I've settled into getting a Linode server and with some persuasion my brother decided he can live without ASP.NET for a while and adopt Django. So a 540mb RAM VPS is not out of the question. As long as it runs fine from Australia, it should all be smooth sailing. Since I'm on a Windows platform I can't do that type of configuration now, but I'll try once I get the server up and running.
