I have only just seen this, been away.

In my view, the best place to start from is Rawtenstall, the northern
terminus.  There is a free car park adjacent.

Get a return for the round trip and perhaps break your journey on the
return at Bury (on a market day) and/or at Ramsbottom.  Enjoy a proper
meat-pie, (NB not pork) either hot or cold; and get some Bury black pudding.

The Railway has some great locomotives, if you avoid those of the Midland
Railway.  The Company does work for other railways.  Have a look at the
website.
