This has long puzzled me too, Alan. I now rely on my trusty Garmin- after
looking at a map to figure my general heading and any particular way points I
wish to see. By using the various options (fastest/shortest, avoiding tolls,
main roads etc) I drove through some delightful parts of France, which I would
never have seen if I'd relied on map reading alone. I've heard people knocking
sat-navs, but mine allows me to get on and enjoy the driving without worrying
about getting too lost or having to get the map out at every junction.

Hi Alan,

E roads are European trunk routes - so keep the same designation regardless of
borders.

A roads are generally motorways/autoroutes – but beware in France as D
(departmental) roads change their numbering as you cross department borders.
And if you are using an old map many used to be called National roads RN – and
the D numbering might – or might not – bear any relation to the RN numbering!

Can anyone enlighten me as to why roads on t’ continent have two names e.g.
from Peter’s latest posting “You’ll pick up the same A6/E15 the other side”

Just got back from the Dutch club’s superb party to celebrate their 40th at
Assen followed by a tour around Amsterdam, Arnhem and Ypres. If it wasn’t for
the SatNav we could driven to Turkey if we had to rely on the road signs!Cheers
