My 1987 4/4 has a funny little solid black box on the engine side of the 
bulkhead. This controlled the reduced power dim dip but failed so soon after 
purchase that I've never thought much about it since. I presume that it is /was 
some sort of voltage stepper/relay. Wings lights were unaffected by the 
failure, Headlights bith Dip and Main are also unaffected. The failure has 
never been the subject of an MOT issue over the last 20 years or more.
