Mon and OpenView are not necessarily incompatible.  We're using both to
monitor a couple hundred machines, routers, etc.  Checkout my alert script
"hpov.alert" to see how we've integrated mon with HPOV.

Basically, we use mon to send traps to HPOV;  HPOV then executes scripts to
do stuff.  That way, we can use mon to monitor all the non-SNMP services,
protocols, etc. unavailable in HPOV, but also take advantage of all the
nifty snmp and snmp trap features of HPOV.
