I wouldn't be surprised if by Perl 5.8, the interface has changed enough
so that https.monitor no longer works like it should. Or it could be
another vendor (in this case Mandrake) problem...
If anyone has a Mandrake 9.1 box they can probably figure it out, I don't
have access to one so I can't help out, sorry.
