do your syslog files have entries that say "failure for" or "ignoring
alert" or "calling alert"? also, does mail.alert work when you run it
outside of mon, e.g. from a shell cd into alert.d and run:
echo badness | ./mail.alert afreyvogel
do you get the email from that?
