Maybe introducing non-redirecting version and making it a
build-time or run-time option with a remark nearby to provide
feedback and keeping it for release or two might help?

Making choice helps clean code, considering backwards
compatibility certainly doesn't... but those breaking it 
often tend to get frowned upon. :)

I'll ask users of ALT Linux monit package on sysadmins ML
what do they think of this; if there will be any reasonable
feedback, I'll try to translate and forward it back.
