Process and parent process id is -1

Sorry to trouble the group with this, but I've searched high and low  
for the answer to this.  Why is it that my process status pages are  
showing -1 for both the pid and the parent pid?  I'm not even sure  
what relevant information to include here except to say that monit is  
working fine, so it must know the pids, but they just don't show up  
on the html page.
