Enabling the DebugMessages define in Control.cs, and other debugging, I notice that when Return works, the TextBoxBase control gets both a WM_KEYDOWN and a WM_CHAR message. When it fails to work, the control only gets a WM_KEYDOWN message. The attached test case demonstrates the issue. Just give it focus, add a char or two of text to see more clearly, and press return a few times.
