Hey,

We do indeed regularly contribute to and take code from .NET Core to replace
old/buggy parts of Mono's class libraries where it makes sense. This is an
ongoing process.

.NET Core is currently focused on server-side application development, while
Mono is primarily used in Xamarin/Unity for mobile or game development.

MonoDevelop is still being developed because it is the foundation for Visual
Studio for Mac (formerly Xamarin Studio) and is a great IDE for both mobile
development with Xamarin or web app development with .NET Core / ASP.NET Core
if you're on macOS.

Hope that helps,
Alex
