This is exactly what I did. In fact the RPM installers are only available for RedHat 8,9. I am using 7.3. I downloaded the mono & mcs sources, and successfully compiled, and installed the mono-0.26 project by doing:
configure make make install
However, the mcs compilation failed with the following error:

I think this must be mcs specific, as the reported *.cs file comes with it:
