Thanks richard, that is exactly what I mean, unfortunately it run on 
Microsoft platforms only.

I have been given another solution to my problem, see below for anyone 
else who may find these useful.

http://itextsharp.sourceforge.net
iTextSharp looks like it will serve my purpose.
