* unify the data structures used to set default values
* do not extend from QSettings, rather use a QSettings instance internally and
create this only if a main application instance has been created (there is a
lot of voodoo going on inside Qt and we better ensure we never use QSettings
unless there is a QApplication instance); the settings class can now be used to
retrieve default values even if no QSettings instance is docked yet
