If you're interested in cloud-based private repository hosting - either Git or Mercurial - https://bitbucket.org/ is free for unlimited private repositories. It's a pretty good service and is worth it if you're not willing to make the jump to paid hosting on GitHub.
It's also worth checking out http://www.repositoryhosting.com/ for low-cost SVN/Git/Mercurial hosting.
