This beloved, oft-quoted ("As you wish...") cult film, directed by
Rob Reiner and based on the novel by William Goldman, is a clever
fairy tale that not only spoofs the genre, but honors it at the same
time.
A kindly grandfather sits down with his grandson and reads him a
bedtime story. The story is one that has been passed down from father
to son for generations - it's a classic (if slightly bent) tale of
love and adventure as the beautiful Princess Buttercup (Robin Penn
Wright) is kidnapped and held against her will in order to marry the
odious Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon), and Westley (her
childhood beau, now returned as the Dread Pirate Roberts) attempts to
save her.
On the way he meets an accomplished swordsman (Mandy Patinkin) and a
huge, super strong giant (pro wrestler Andre the Giant), both of whom
become companions on his quest. Along the road to rescue, they tangle
with evil-doers, cranky eccentrics and assorted monsters. Will true
love conquer all? What do you think?
