Meet writer/director William Richert (Winter Kills) and star Meredith
Salenger (Dream a Little Dream) at the U.S. theatrical premiere of
the "lost" River Phoenix drama, AREN'T YOU EVEN GOING TO KISS ME
GOODBYE?.
"GOODBYE is a nifty little sleeper funny, sad, heartfelt and true,
with an adolescent angst that lingers." - Nathan Rabin, ONION AV CLUB
Discover the lost River Phoenix comedy/drama ARENT YOU EVEN GONNA
KISS ME GOODBYE? when writer/director WILLIAM RICHERT and star
MEREDITH SALENGER visit The Loft to present the U.S. theatrical
premiere of this digitally remastered Directors Cut of Richerts
1988 film, A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon.
William Richerts uniquely personal, semi-autobiographical film,
originally released by 20th Century Fox in 1988 under the title A
Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon, stars the late, great River
Phoenix (My Own Private Idaho) as the sensitive and brooding Jimmy
Reardon, a young man looking for love and his place in the world. Co-
starring Meredith Salenger, Ann Magnuson, Ione Skye, Louanne Sirota
and a young Matthew Perry, Richerts original version of the film
(titled ARENT YOU EVEN GONNA KISS ME GOODBYE?) was seized and
severely re-edited by the studio (without the directors approval),
then released with a new, less melancholy title, and promoted as a
teen exploitation film. When the film failed to connect with
audiences in its newly bowdlerized state, the studio let the movie
fade into cinema history, creating a cautionary tale of how studio
interference can destroy an artist's vision.
Now, 20 years later, William Richert has rescued his original version
of the film (based on his own autobiographical novel), inserted
missing footage, reinstated the original title, and restored the
opening credit song by Johnny Mathis and the original lost score
composed by the legendary Elmer Bernstein (also cut from Foxs
version), as well as an original song written and performed by River
Phoenix exclusively for the movies end credit sequence.
Darker, deeper and significantly more powerful than the teen-friendly
version released by Fox in 1988, ARENT YOU EVEN GOING TO KISS ME
GOODBYE? reveals the classic in the making that was Richerts
original vision, and rescues a great lost performance by the late
cult idol River Phoenix, whose fan base has steadily grown since his
untimely death in 1993.
WILLIAM RICHERT has written and directed a long list of unique and
idiosyncratic films, including the cult classic Winter Kills (1979)
and Success (1980) starring Jeff Bridges, and starred with River
Phoenix in Gus Van Sants My Own Private Idaho (1991).
MEREDITH SALENGER has starred in numerous films and TV shows, and is
well-known for her work in such beloved 1980s teen films as The
Journey of Natty Gann (1985) with John Cusak, and Dream a Little
Dream (1989) with Corey Feldman and Corey Haim. She has also starred
in numerous other films, including John Carpenters Village of the
Damned (1995), and Lake Placid (1999), and guest-starred on such TV
series as Dawsons Creek, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Super Robot
Monkey Team Hyperforce Go!. She was also recently named Maxim
Magazines Hottest Woman of the 80s.
