Steve,

Oar leathers are to prevent wear on the looms of your oars at the
oarlocks.  They also make rowing a lot easier if you put a bit of
neetsfoot oil on them as a lubricant (I also use tallow).  Another
benefit is that they fill up the space in the oarlock so that you don't
have so much slop there while rowing.

Wouldn't row without leathers on my oars - life is too short to do it the
hard way.
