Steve, Knock on wood - I haven't had any core problems with my '81 M-15. The toe rails do bolt through both the deck and the hull but I expect that the balsa core does not extend to the edge. Jerry might weigh in on this but I suspect you will not find it to be a problem (You will still want to make sure the through holes are sealed as soon as you can get to it).
