Jerry, I use the Forespar tiller extension too, and find it delightful: holds course while single-handing; and locks rudder in place in the marina to keep it from swinging with every passing wave.
My tiller is 36" long and I mounted the Forespar socket 1" form the forward end of the tiller. I have no problems with that location, and the tiller isn't weakened with the fitting.
