I'm towing my M17/Trailrite with a VW Eurovan. It can tow 4500 lbs, but can only brake 1500 lbs. When I first towed Puff it did feel pretty awkward during braking. The total weight of trailer and boat is about 2250 lbs, so I was pretty sure I needed trailer brakes.
I had a local outfitter in Lake Oswego, OR do the installation: http://www.neturf.com/vanspecialties/trailers.html They recommended hydraulic surge brakes for a boat trailer because the electric brakes are vulnerable to corrosion problems. The total cost was about $700. Most of the parts cost was for a new axle with brake mounts. The braking, even on steep hills is great.
