Well, drat! I see how the issue of the leading edge stripe makes a sock desirable. It's been a while since I lived in England, and things have probably changed, but suspect that odd-colored sails would be another instance of that "Marks & Spencer look" that used to make us easy to pick out in any crowd by that certain lack of style.
