I asked the question re: new Honda 2 HP gas caps after dropping mine
overboard this summer. The dumb restraining clip had broken or come loose.
Bad Design (and I'm a mechanical engineer). Steve has it right. I eliminated
the restraining lanyard and now remove the cap and put it in my pocket while
filling the motor. I also keep a spare on board. You would think for $1,000
bucks, they could add a gas gauge.
I bought a 1 gallon plastic gas tank with a pull-out flexible hose to help
fill the OB on-board tank. Less chance on spilling gas and it fits in the
starboard sail locker. Any other comments on filling on-board tanks? I have
to do this once an hour when motoring, takes a liter.

Hey, everyone.
I have already learned the art of hating my
outboard(a Tohatsu 2.5 that Dik Lang assures me will
run fine if taken good care of.) I am sure many of you
know my pain. LOL I am ready to forgo the whole
outboard and go motorless like the Pardeys(whom I was
fortunate enough to sail with, for about 15 minutes, a
story for another time.) My question for you is, have
any of you relied on alternative sources of
propulsion, and what have been your successes(and
failures.) I am thinking oars(standing facing forward)
for the M-15. What about a single paddle with the
tiller tied off? This is mostly for getting in and out
of the marina, not for long distance. I am looking
forward to hearing your suggestions!

Found Scott's account. I'm going to make a page for the MSOG of the posts,
but in the meantime, you can find Scott's write-up by going to archive
search page http://msog.org/cfmods/list_archive_search.cfm and use
"storage" for the first search term, "gas" for the second search term and
"Scott" for the third term or any order of the three, and enter "1999" for
the year. You should get five messages. There is one follow-up message
using the year "2000".

Aw heck, here's the string, just click on this:
http://msog.org/cfmods/list_archive_results.cfm?first_srch_text=storage&seco
nd_srch_text=gas&third_srch_text=Scott&date_year_srch_text=1999

for 2000:
http://msog.org/cfmods/list_archive_results.cfm?first_srch_text=storage&seco
nd_srch_text=gas&third_srch_text=Scott&date_year_srch_text=2000

Rusty,

There is an article in the How-to section of the MSOG site on sculling oars
for the Montys. Go to http://msog.org/how-to/oars.cfm to see the article,
and go to the Small Boat Journal articles on the subject at
http://councill.home.mindspring.com/sbjournal/sbjournal.html

Also a couple of sites listed in the MSOG Links list for sculling and oars
site, notably, http://www.oarclub.org/index.html

Gee, that MSOG site has just about everything!

Steve,

Rondezvous is an ancient celtic word meaning:" The man can't type". I can
spell, it's just that my fingers are dyslexic. Rendezvous on the other hand,
is
a french word meaning a pre-arranged meeting or a particular place. It was
the term used for the annual get-to-gether of fur trappers in the early
1800s.
Their rendezvous was a wild drunken brawling hagging spree where they also
did
a bit of fur trading. Ours should be a wee bit more tame, and all you need
to
bring is everything you need for the trip. There are a few restaurants in
the area, and some land based sight seeing opportunities. I'll get more
info
online shortly.

I get far more from this list than I could ever give back. It's a great
pleasure to be part of this group of friends -- and a part of that is the
diversity in personality, experience, location, focus etc. Which is another
way of saying that neophyte questions are as much a part of this as (say)
discussions of windvanes that leave me struggling to understand even a part
of them.

Not only that, but we seem to do a good job of going off-topic in the right
direction. It was here that I was given encouragement and information that
were a lot of help (to put it mildly) in removing and refitting Dolphin's
diesel engine earlier this year.

Off-topic: I was strongly reminded of the joys of an M-15 yesterday while
removing several square feet of the attractive (but doomed) teak cabin floor
on Dolphin because the underlying wood has rotted. As I was cutting across
it with the Rotozip, it suddenly occurred to me that I really, _really_
didn't want to accidentally cut through the hull. Luckily the smell of
cutting resin turned out to be because the previous owner had the same
problem, and had solved it (albeit temporarily) by injecting resin into the
rotted area. <Sigh!>

A heads up for the M-15 crowd. I have seen several posts on the Potter
sites about the Honda 2 Hp motor and lost gas caps. It may be a design
problem or operator error. I suspect resting a large fuel container on top
of the motor would pull the cap loose, but I do not have the boat at home to
look at it. Of course the cap sinks, so it is not possible to tell if the
restraint was broken. It is not clear to me which vintage motors have the
problem.

My Honda 2-hp gas cap is restrained only by a flimsy little plastic "tee"
that sticks into the tank - it can be pulled (or knocked) free with only the
tiniest of effort. Whoever designed it should be summarily excoriated. It
would be better to have no restraint at all, so that people wouldn't be
tempted to trust it.

I NEVER rely on that to keep my gas cap when I'm refueling on the water.
Probably it would be wise to carry a spare cap, because removing it and
setting it down somewhere while you refill carries its own risks I suppose.
Knowing me (and I do) I probably won't get around to ordering a spare until
I finally really do lose this one into the water, however.

It would not surprise me in the least to hear that people had lost their
caps.
