With the single side stays (shrouds) an M15 mast is easy to raise. I attach
a short cord to the bow cleat with an eye in the outer end. To this I
connect the jib halyard. I stand in the cockpit and slide the mast to the
rear until it engages in the jaws of the bracket on the cabin roof. Then I
walk forward raising the mast until the shrouds are tight. I hold the mast
up with one hand and tighten the jib halyard, cleating it at the mast. This
holds the mast up while I walk forward to connect to forestay. While on the
bow, I hank the jib in place.
Ive heard of some using the topping lift line to temporarily hold the mast
up but most use the jib halyard. You have to make sure that the shrouds dont
tangle anything as you lift the mast. This works so well, that even with two
folks rigging the boat, I still do it this way.
Fair winds

For an even a lower tech solution for short term tiller locking, I stretch
a single piece of bungee cord between the stern cleats. Then a couple of
turns of the bungee looped around the tiller handle holds the rudder in
place.

I use a similar setup on our Potter. I just hook a heavy bungy to the stern

cleats, and activate with a jam cleat. Works great!

When I joined the list last month, it became apparent that I would have to
do something about separating my list messages from my normal bevy of mail.
Outlook express has a neat little utility that allows you to set message
filtering tools. Here is what I did: From the Tools|Message Rules|Mail
window, You can add a rule by clicking on the new button.
1. In the select the conditions for your rule : check "Where the subject
lines contains specific words"
2. Select the actions for your rule
"Move it to the specified folder"
3. Rule description
"Apply this rule after the message arrives
4.Name of the rule
"New mail rule #X" (next available number)
When you click OK, this box goes away and the underlying Message Rules
window will appear. In the Rule description dialog box this rule is waiting
to be finished. Click on the blue contains a new window will promt you for
Specific Words. I found , for some reason that cut and paste from an actual
subject part works better than just typing in the "Re: M_Boats:" line. That
should be all you need in the rule.
The next part of the rule will move the message to a specific folder. I
created a sail folder earlier just for this. The rule should look like this
"where the subject line contains Re:M_Boats: move the message to the Sail
folder". Wal la all your list messages should now appear in nice order w/ no
viagra ads inbetween, ready for you to read at your leisure.

ps sorry I made this so long winded.

They say the 2 happiest days a boat owner can have are the day they bought
it and the day they sold it. I don't know if this is true or not. I
currently have 3 boats.....having never sold any.

You're a sailor after my own heart, Howard. I currently have my eye on the
Chuck Paine-designed Norseboat,
www.norseboat.com : I saw her at "Strictly Sail Chicago" on February 1st.
I'd love to have a Norseboat to do
some wilderness-tripping with canoeist/kayaker friends. But the only way I
could afford it would be to sell
my M17, and I don't think I will ever be able to part with my M17. So I'll
just have to wait a few years 'til
I can afford a second boat (actually, it would be a third boat, b/c I'm 1/3
partner in a Pacific Seacraft
Flicka 20'). I told a local broker that I was enamored with the M23
Offshore Cutter. He said, "You'd have to
sell your M17." I said, "I don't think I could." He said, "Boat are
'she's', Craig, and no man can handle
more than one woman at a time." I said, "I want a harem." --Craig, M17

Bob and Jerry,

Any news on the new M23 Offshore Cutter? Have you built hull #2?

Does the sailing community "at large" know this boat exists? I noticed a
recent issue of "Sail" magazine had
an article on thin-water cruisers, and the new M23 sure would've been worth
mentioning . . .

Just curious, as well as hopeful that the Cutter will be a success.

Thanks,

In the parking lot, is it just as easy to raise the mast going forward to
jib stay or is it done the other way sometimes?
