You keep expanding your horizons, from the voyaging point of view and from all the things that make sailing such an enjoyable obsession. First you learn the basics of sailing; just getting underway and learning how to adjust sails to let you go in the direction you want. Now you are into learning basic navigation: how do I get from A to B, and how do I do it in the fog? Then come all the fun things like learning how to make proper knots and doing splicing and how to whip the ends of your lines. Then come studies of the flora and fauna that you see while sailing: the sea birds, fish, possibly turtles, and biggies like sharks or whales. The universe keeps expanding into sun, moon and stars (celestial navigation) Oh, and while you are learning all this, you come up with improvements to your boat, and you learn about wood working / fiberglass repairs / sail repairs. You learn to keep your outboard running and happy. It's a never ending expanding universe of skills and know-how. Dive in and enjoy it, despite the occasional groundings or other bumps that happen to all of us.
