Mine came with an adhesive-backed Velcro strip that I stuck on a vertical surface next to the compass. That allows me to attach a mount (which has matching Velcro on the back) that has the long sensor cable attached, and I just drop that cable over the side (it's plenty long enough). The actual knotmeter slides into the mount. When I'm not actually using it, I just unstick the mount from the Velcro and put the whole thing in the cabin. Very easy to use, and being portable has allowed me to use it on other boats. There are (were?) other versions that used the same instrument head with different mounts, including a wireless connection -- but I preferred the cable.
