Dynamite has copies of "How To Build" (Photo copies of magazine
articles) of the NYMPH, plus his other boats.
The NYMPH is 7'-9" x 3'-6".
Phil Bolger modified the NYMPH by adding 12" of extra width to the same
basic dimensions, which make for a much higher load carrying capacity,
and a more stable platform for getting in and out, without adding much
more weight.
The NYMPH, in the original design is a great rowing dinghy; it's light
weight and easily car topped, but is a bit tender. It takes some care
getting in and out; but like anything, once you know it's idiosyncrasies,
the problem goes away.
Ask Payson if he has the wider model drawings too. I saw them in a
Bolger article in MAIB some time ago, and since Dynamite sells the NYMPH
drawings, maybe he now has the modified version as well.
In rereading his price list, I see that he does have both NYMPH versions
listed. The second - wider model - is called the Rubens NYMPH and it's
dimensions are: 7'-9" x 4'-6".
Dynamite's instructions are excellent - assuming you've built something
before, and have some woodworking experience. If you haven't, and this
is your first project, then buy his book called "Instant Boats" where he
gives you a training course in taped seam boat building.
Building the NYMPH goes quite rapidly, but then figure that you will need
just as much, if not even more time, for the finishing.
Sanding seams; filling the cloth weave; fairing; varnishing and painting
take more time than the bare wood work alone. But overall it's a real
fun project and well worth the effort.
