One is to simply use a razor blade and lift the old varnish off the gel coat. This generally works well on flat surfaces, not well at all if the varnish is on non-skid surfaces. A second method is to use a heat gun. One must be more careful, but this method is very quick, effective, and safe if used carefully. A third method I have used with excellent results is to apply a varnish remover to the dried varnish and remove with a scraper. A product called SOY.Gel has produced excellent results while at the same time being relatively safe to use and nondamaging to the gel coat.
