Thanks for the reply. I never considered the issue regarding stepping the mast as I have always had boats with swept back spreaders. As I will keep the boat in dry storage with the mast up, I may consider the bracket.

Ther are better in that they tend to keep the mast in column; not better because the uppers need to be backed off before raising or lowering the mast.
