Hey Tod, thanks for the review of the La-Z-Boy cushions and Sport-a-Seat. Initially, I thought the Sport-a-Seat would be the way to go, but over time, it looked like it would be a poor fit at best and take up a lot of room.
Having come from a larger boat, I have had to continually retrain myself to place more of a priority on space and weight considerations. For the time, I have chucked the quarter berth cushion in the attic and utilized the space for tub storage as you have. At present, the remaining (exposed) seating area is filled in with throw-able cockpit cushions; functional, but not ascetically pleasing. Hopefully, this exposed ugliness, will give rise to a near term solution (La-Z-Bouy?) and new upholstery. For what it's worth, my tub configuration is: (2) 28" long tubs stacked farthest back it (2) 15" long tubs stacked athwart ship next (1) 14" hand tote (sort of tub with a handle in the center) The tubs can certainly carry more stuff that one should probably have on an M17, but it has provided abundant storage. The long tubs in back are fairly easy to reach (not requiring a boat hook to pull out). The hand tote is used for current trip stuff (parts, tools, or cruise related things). All purchased from my marine chandlery-Target! I assume you used vinyl on the cushion bottoms. Of the remaining fabric for the cushions, how many yards of material were necessary for the cushions you did? On the q'berth, one needs a support for the part of the cushion near your knees because otherwise they tend to fall forward off the q'berth That would certainly be doable, using an existing tub (the toolbox galley?). They are too wide to fit up against the hull under the side-decks and so take up a huge amount of area on the v-berth. Not being waterproof, you don't really want to leave them out exposed to heavy dew or possible rain. They are just too big for the boat, IMHO. There are smaller, non-ratcheted seatbacked cushions; Rick and Bill R. have them I think. How do you guys like them? The extra inch of thickness should make for some GOOD sleeping, as between that and the fact that the foam is 18 yrs newer I no longer bottom out. Jerry must've used the GOOD Quality foam for them to last that long. And the covers were just BEGINNING to show wear (probably mostly because of 80# dog toenails!).
