Tom, my mast has a track for the pole, if you like I can send you a pic. Apparently the PO was more sucidal than I. But I bought my m17 in an inland lake surrounded by cliffs beautiful area, but not a lot of wind. Things are different here on the Gulf Coast.

If I were racing in the spinnaker fleet I would certainly put one on my mast. It allows for much more precise triming. For recreational sailing, I've never really missed having it. Rather than trim as perfectly as possible, when I singlehand I usually over trim. That way I don't have as much worry about the sail collapsing.
