My M17 battens live in the sail full time.  They aren't very long, so
they don't seem to get in the way.

You could just sew the pocket closed instead of replacing the elastic.

The elastic is shot. I will have to get the sail to a shop but in the 
mean time I did what you said, seam to be fine.
