About the only way you can bring along a 17 foot kayak
while your 15 to 17 foot boat is on the water is to
put an elastic cover around the cockpit and tow it .
I'd still make sure your Mariner XL has floatation
bags in the bow and stern for good measure. Towing the
kayak at 4 or 5 knots ( a little faster than the 3 1/2
to 4 knots of paddle speed )in a straight line should
not be a problem as the Mariner has a reasonably high
bow, as I recall ). However, tacking while towing such
a long "dinghy" could well cause the kayak to flip
over and in any event, would cause great drag on the
sailboat during tacks. If I wanted to kayak while on a
sailboat trip with a small trailerable sailboat, I'd
invest in a small inflatable kayak with reasonable
performance in tracking and speed. There are several
of these around. Innova makes several. West Marine
carries a few from different manufacturers. This way,
you have the best of both worlds at the same time!
Good Luck. Ron
