I had the privilege of being on the maiden sail of Sean's Dauntless. It was perfect and handled well.
The maiden launch took place about 3pm on Friday. We motored to the Channel Islands Harbor and entrance and raised the main and working jib in about 10 knots. Dauntless took off and performed beautifully! This was Sean's first rigging and test of his handy work under the water line as most of you know. This happened to be one the best days on the water in this area. There was a slight 1-2 NW swell and constant 10 knot wind. Sean was beaming like a proud father. Saturday we sailed from Channel Islands to Ventura Harbor instead of Anacapa with the Potters. One Potter, a Montgomery 15 and an another 18' home built headed to Ventura in no wind. We motored for about two miles before a breeze came up. The breeze came up to about 10 knots shortly. Sean put up a Genoa (150) he bought on Ebay and it turned out to work very well in the 10 knot breeze. We tacked back to the three other boats and round up behind them. We quickly passed them again and round up behind them again. Boy, Dauntless handles beautifully. After the third circling of the three boats we headed into Ventura Harbor for lunch and site seeing. The return was in 3-4 ft NW swell with about 15 knots. The Genoa was probably too much but Sean wanted to see what Dauntless would do. As you know, Sean is a great narrator of trips and his restoration of Dauntless. Most of the Potter sailors had been following his web progress. I'm going to let Sean fill in the rest.
