Tom:  Thanks for the info.  This one does not have a cap - the prior owner
had wrapped it with a lot of rigging tape - so now that I know there is no
"magic" device, I can make it work - appreciate the help!

Jay, I believe the newer M17s solved this problem (if it is one) by
capturing the shroud under a cap at the spreader end.  You might be able to
retrofit such a cap.

I would say a combination of spreader boot (when the rig is down) and
tension on the rigging as well as the boot (when it's up) covers the bases.
