Thanks to those who responded with your kind words. Flying is my profession, but sailing has always been my passion. Jeff (M17 # 336), to answer your question regarding modifications/options. Initially, they are mainly cosmetic rather than structural. Specifically, Bob has agreed to include the following options for a reasonable charge:
1. contrasting light grey non-skid molded in 2. painted red boot stripe (waterline) 3. sunlight prism integrated in forward deck 4. electrical AC/DC system: interior lighting (4 directional), exterior lighting, charger, external plug 5. Idasailor "C" model swing-up rudder (The "C" model is 8 lbs heavier, dimensionally larger, and stronger as compared to Idasailor's standard M17 model. Since this is also the replacement rudder for the C22, I'm guessing the "C" stands for Catalina.) 6. teak hatch boards (as opposed to standard marine plywood) 7. manual bilge pump (actuated from cockpit) 8. positive flotation Because I have no plans to trailer this vessel, a fixed-keel option would have been very desirable to me (as was offered in earlier M17s). From a builder's perspective though, Bob chose to curb my enthusiasm towards this idea. Maybe I should have requested an extra 100lbs of lead shot. Post-factory options: 1. headsail roller furling 2. 4 coats bottom epoxy / 2 coats anti-foul paint 3. Sunbrella / s.s. dodger (form + function = $$!) 4. misc. items (outboard with alternator, integrated GPS / depth, wind instrumentation) Although a few of these items are rather pricey (I'm taking the "5th" regarding the dodger), I firmly believe a reasonably equipped M17 (& M15) offers the most bang for the buck.
