Another two cents worth: Rejoyce, #361, came with a permanently
installed topping lift--line from fitting at end of boom to block at
top of mast, port side, down to a jam cleat at the base of the mast,
starboard side. I made one change to that, reeved to block on the
starboard side of the mast, same as the jam cleat and the traditional
side for all mainsail gear. I also made an addition which I have used
on other boats, especially my Cape Cod Catboat with her huge sail:
two light lines fastened at appropriate places on the topping lift
and down to eyes on the port side of the boom. These "Lazy Jacks"
keep the canvas from falling overboard, even though the boom is held
up nicely. Lazy Jacks are traditionally on both sides of the sail,
but I prefer them on the port side only, lowering my main while
heading slightly off on a starboard tack. You young and agile Monty
Sailors don't need that, but a decrepit and handicapped Old Goat
needs all the help he can get! Enough said, I am off for a day of
sailing Thursday, 4/26, on my beautiful Beaver Lake. Mid sixties,
westerlies ten to fifteen. What could be nicer?
