Before I bought my M-15 (cica 1982) I too was concerned about the steel punches and the swelling of the keel trunk. I read Sean's trials & tribulations with Dauntless and almost passed on buying my boat and wait for a lead keel Monty to become available. I spoke with Bob Eeg about the possibility of having this problem in the future and he recommeded a new CB if I were to experience any sticking problems. It appears that the trunk swells due to the rusty steel punches and squeezes the CB. The new CB that Bob sells is slimmer and eliminates the sticking issue. It's also alot cheeper then replacing the balast, not to mention the labor and trouble of the surgery involved. Bob is very aware of the issue with the early model Monty's and this is his recommendation. Personnally, I'd follow Bob's recommendation before I attempted any major surgery.
