My first response would be to contact the folks at Ullman Sails, as they
made the sail for the boat on the webpage. Ask them what they think.

Second - It appears a little complicated and "rigid" for a trailerable boat
- some of the efficiency may be lost by virtue of scale - the struts(?) may
be large and increase windage and the deadly 'weight aloft' issue comes into
play. Furling is fine when it works (CDI the BEST IMHO) but it really sucks
when the 'motor' on your ONLY sail is not operational. Motor on your sail - I
don't know about this.
I think it is a case of complicating a good idea - although I have no
knowledge of a suitable reefing system for a lateen sail that is any different
from
the customary (benefit?).

There is a webpage with a - Feathering- lateen sail (Pacific style) that I
saw years ago looked promising?

Some Potters use a Sunfish rig - gotta love that! (a little underpowered for
my 1500# boat) Maybe spot on for a M-15 sailed shorthanded or in breezy
conditions.

My question re: the Flying Lateen - how does the leading edge rotate by the
side struts on a broad reach or a run - one of the advantages to a cat or
lateen or unstayed rig is the ability to sail by the lee - I don't see this
happening on the Flying Lateen? (old dogitis)

This is what is great about this sport - innovations on one of the oldest
modes of water trans. in the 21st century! I wish the folks at Flying Lateen
all
the best and much success. They have dedicated a lot of effort to the
project.

Now if I can just figger out how to turn my main into a 'flat top', fathead
and look (ugly) but efficient like the AC guys Hmmmmmmmmm? Sean, Jerry
-running backstays controlled by my Palm Treo phone with an infra red receiver
powered by a Solarex 10 watt panel -sealed battery and .... NO stop the
madness!

Have a great day, I am going to take my medicine now..........

GO
M-17 #316a sometimes parading as #210 (Sail#), its a covert thing - don't
ask, the guys at Port Hueneme Naval Surface Warfare will pay you a visit if
you
ask ?'s. Something about der Homeland Security.

Nurse!!!! Where's my medicine???????????
