An excerpt from the "Encyclopedia of Nautical Knowledge":  Brail. A  
rope used as a leechline or buntline for hauling a sail in against  
the mast, preparatory to or instead of stowing. Brails are fitted to  
fore-and-aft and lateen sails …  Brail in, to take a sail in by means  
of brails. Worked fine on my first M15 jib, will take photos of it  
installed on my current M15 "Rejoyce!" in the near future. Someone  
please tell this technically impoverished Old Goat how you provide  
links to photos with a submission here.
