I had the alternator option added to my 6hp Suzuki 4 stroke and it does a great job. In fact, that's the main reason I chose the Suzuki over the Yamaha 4hp, which doesn't offer an alternator option. It puts out 6 amps (same as my built in shore power charger) and doesn't have to be revved up high to acheive that. I installed the built in 120 volt charger thinking I'd use it to top off the battery at marinas when I'm on extended cruises, but I've never had to use it for that. It's main duty is to keep the battery topped off and "conditioned" when the boat is home.
