I have been reminded in a similar fashion Randy. Disappearing hats, or in my case, a cushion escapes during a heavy weather tack/musical chairs routine. "Hey, where's my damn cushion?" MAN OVERBOARD!! These occasions are truly a valuable test as the skipper did not call it. Something happens, you react. No chance to have a brief review prior to making decisions. That's why I like crew to call it or for there to be an 'event'.....like the potential drowning of your favourite (floating) cushion.
Today is my personal favorite day of the year (other than every sailing day in the summer). Although it just officially becomes winter today and sounds monstrously depressing....the days actually begin to get longer...or more importantly to me, the nights become shorter. We are on the downhill run and it makes me a happy lad. My wife and I are having a Winter Solstice Soirée this evening and you are all invited. It starts at six, bring your guitar, congas, hurdy gurdy, your mini moog, rainstick and didgeridoo.....a bassplayer would be nice too. Cheers All. I was able to retrieve the hat after 45 minutes of effort. My son's 12-year-old friend who was along for the adventure laughed at me when he saw me in the hat some months afterward. It was scary and sobering thinking about what it would have been like if it had been one of the kids overboard!
