Ed, Yea, the 17 can take a lot of weather and with the proper sail set you should be able to handle most of what the Bay has to offer. The most I have been in is about 25kts but I believe some of the other 17 owners might have been out in more than that. There are a bunch of accomplished sailors (17 & 15's) on this board who have might be able to better attest to the heavy weather nature of the M boats and I'm sure they will be happy to relate their experience. Cap't Greg is the other 17 owner and he monitors this board so if he's available I'm sure he will chime in. Good luck in your search and IMHO you can't find a better small boat then the M boats.
