OK,I'm stumped here. Last year I installed 2 group 27 agm batteries in Dauntless. This spring I totally revamped the electrical system including a new Blue Seas System panel with amp and volt meters. I was shocked to see that when my 9.9 Yamaha is running it is putting out almost a 16 volt charge to the batteries. I have done some research and apparently this is normal for this motor. Knowing that AGM's are only supposed to be charged at around 14.2 so you don't cook them, I'm concerned about an upcoming trip to Catalina Island which could require hours of motoring. According to everything I have read you cannot adjust the alternators output, it's fixed. An external regulator would seem to be the answer, except, the motor charges back through the battery cable. I don't think I want to put a regulator on that?? And, even if I did, I haven't found any regulators that would work without stepping the size of the #4 cable way down. I have a long run from the batteries to the starter and don't want to step down the cable size and increase the resistance and voltage drop when the starter is operating. What to do???
