I think the usual installation is located in the cockpit area such that one  
may continue to steer the boat (near the normal helmsman's position) - in  the 
vertical side of the seat base with clearance for the handle taken into  
consideration. I do not have one mounted in my 17 as of yet, (planned), but 
have  
had them in previous owned boats and most OEM installs I recall were along 
those  lines. Maybe a quick check of Mate's fine works would elaborate/correct 
my 
 viewpoint. Can't think which side of the cockpit is appropriate ('Tryin' to  
think and nothin' happens')
 
I have used a pump mounted to a board (6''x24") with hoses but that was for  
moving from boat to boat and 'service duty' type work around the marina.
